Cats’ Mouse toy

This little mouse takes very little fabric and will keep any cat happy and busy. Consider making extras for your local animal shelter or rescue organization. The toy features a hook and loop closed bottom so fresh catnip can be added whenever it is needed.

Materials:

  • Scraps of fabric – fuzzy, fluffy fabric (such as valor, fleece or fur) are recommended for a realistic cat toy. (To use a different type of fabric, consider using iron-on interfacing to add body to the fabric.)
  • Small scrapes of felt
  • 2″ strip of 3/4 to 1″ hook & loop tape – cut in half lengthwise
  • Thread
  • A small wad of polyester stuffing
  • Pattern
  • Optional: embroidery thread for nose and whiskers

Note:All directions refer to a 1/4″ seam allowance, unless otherwise noted.
Cutting

  • Cut the body, bottom and tail from the feature fabric.
  • Cut the ears and feet from felt.

Sew the tail:

With the right sides of the fabric together, fold the tail (as it was cut on the fold) and sew the edge , leaving the small end open for turning. Trim the seam allowance. Turn right side out. Tip: A small dowel, with one end sharpened by a pencil sharpener, a small screw driver or the machine seam guide shown here, help with the turning process. A thick fur may require a smaller seam allowance, to allow for turning.

Sew the ear:

Cut the ear placement line on the body pattern. Fold each ear in half matching the curved edges to each other. Place the fold of the ear into the slit made on the body piece. Sew a dart formation to hold the ear in place, starting with a 1/4″ seam allowance and tapering to the end.

Attach feet and tail:

Baste the tail to one side of a body piece at the mark shown on the pattern piece, placing the small open edge along the raw edge of the body piece.
Baste a foot to each body piece at the marking, placing the straight edge of the foot along the raw edge of the body.

Join Body sections:

Place right sides of body pieces together, matching the edges and ear darts. Sew the curved edge sung a 1/4″ seam allowance. Place the tail and feet inside the body and set aside.

Sewing hook and loop:

Place the hook & loop tape along the right side, raw edge at the placement marks on each piece of the bottom (hook on one edge, loop on the other edge). Sew around the edge of the hook & loop tape.

Bottom seam:

With the right sides together, sew the bottom pieces together, starting at one end of the straight edge, stopping at the hook and loop tape, starting again at the other end of the hook and loop tape and stopping at the other end of the straight edge.

Attaching bottom section:

With the right sides together, place the bottom to the body, matching the seams. Sew the edges together.

Nose and whiskers:

Optional nose and whiskers: Thread a hand sewing needle with embroidery thread. Knot the thread approximately 3″ from the end. Place the needle into the nose area. Make 4 stitches to form a nose, approximately 1/4″ wide. Make a loop of thread for the opposite whisker and knot the thread in the nose area. Cut one end of the loop close to the nose and trim the remaining thread. Stiffen the “whiskers” with bees wax.
